South America Football Club

South America Football Club

One of the pioneering clubs of Rio de Janeiro football, founded in the early twentieth century and participant in the first organized leagues of Rio de Janeiro.

History

South America Football Club was one of the founding clubs of the Metropolitan Football League, one of the first governing bodies for football in Rio de Janeiro in the early twentieth century. Alongside Fluminense, Botafogo, Rio Cricket and other pioneers, the club helped structure the first official competitions in the city. Over the decades and with the growing professionalization of Rio de Janeiro football, South America lost ground to the major clubs that consolidated themselves in the national scene, gradually ending its prominent competitive activities still in the first half of the twentieth century. Today the club is remembered mainly for its historical role in the founding of organized football in Rio de Janeiro, appearing in historical records of the first Rio de Janeiro leagues.
