Sunderland Association Football Club
Sunderland is a club with a century-long history in northeast England, direct rival of Newcastle United in the intense Northeast Derby. The club was one of the most powerful in England in the early twentieth century, with six national titles. After decades of decline, including drops to the third division, Sunderland seeks to restore its historic prestige.
History
Founded in 1879, Sunderland dominated English football in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, winning six First Division titles until 1936. The club was one of the founding members of the Football League in 1890. The 1973 FA Cup, won against Leeds United from the First Division when Sunderland was in the Second, is considered one of the biggest surprises in the history of English football.
