SV Darmstadt 98 is a German club from the city of Darmstadt, in the state of Hesse, known by the nickname Die Lilien (The Lilies). It plays its home matches at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor, the team's home since 1921, and has competed in the Bundesliga during different periods of its history.
History
The club was founded on May 22, 1898 with the name FC Olympia Darmstadt. In early 1919, the association briefly became known as Rasen-Sportverein Olympia and, on November 11 of that year, merged with Darmstädter Sport Club 1905, giving rise to Sportverein Darmstadt 98. The Böllenfalltor stadium has been the team's home since 1921. The current arena, named Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor, has a capacity of approximately 17,800 supporters and is one of the most traditional football grounds in German football. After a long spell in the lower divisions, which lasted about 33 years, Darmstadt returned to the Bundesliga and competed in the 2015–16 and 2016–17 seasons. The Lilies returned to the top flight again in 2023, but failed to avoid relegation in the following season (2023–24).
