Swansea City AFC

Swansea City AFC is the leading club in Wales and one of the most traditional in British football. The Swans made history by becoming the first Welsh club to compete in the Premier League in the modern era, and won the English League Cup in 2013.

History

Founded in July 1912 as Swansea Town, the club spent decades gaining national recognition, navigating the lower divisions of English football with ups and downs. In 1970, it adopted the definitive name Swansea City AFC, reflecting the growth and relevance of the Welsh city on the British stage. The most significant period of the club's history came with John Toshack as manager in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Welshman led Swansea in meteoric fashion, propelling the club from the fourth to the first division of English football in just four consecutive seasons — an unprecedented feat in British football at that time. The modern era brought another historic chapter: the rise to the Premier League in 2011, making Swansea the first Welsh club to compete in the main English league in the era of global broadcasting. The club impressed with its offensive and technical football, attracting international attention. Under the command of Danish Michael Laudrup, the Swans experienced their most glorious moment in the contemporary era, winning the English League Cup in 2013 with a victory over Bradford City. After relegation in 2018, Swansea moved to compete in the Championship, maintaining its identity of technical football and cultural importance in Wales.
