Grande Torino
The Grande Torino was the team that won five consecutive Serie A titles between 1943 and 1949 and is considered one of the greatest teams in football history. Its trajectory ended in the Superga tragedy on May 4, 1949.
History
Led by captain Valentino Mazzola, Torino assembled in the 1940s a team that dominated Italian football. In the 1942-43 season, the club won the Serie A and the Coppa Italia, achieving the double. After the interruption caused by World War II, Torino returned to being champions in 1945-46, 1946-47 and 1947-48. On May 11, 1947, the Italian national team took to the field against Hungary with ten Torino players among the starters, proof of the strength of that squad. On May 4, 1949, the plane bringing the team back from a friendly match against Benfica in Lisbon crashed into the Basilica of Superga near Turin. The accident killed 31 people, including players, officials, journalists and crew members. Torino finished the 1948-49 Serie A with the youth team, and opponents also fielded their youth teams. The club was declared champions, completing the five-title streak.
