History

Torpedo Moscow was founded in 1924 and was associated for decades with the ZIL automobile factory, which provided financial support to the club in the Soviet sports system. Alongside Spartak, Dynamo and CSKA, it formed the group of the capital's major clubs. The brightest period came between the 1950s and 1970s. Torpedo won the Soviet Championship in 1960, 1965 and 1976 (autumn tournament), in addition to several editions of the USSR Cup. The 1960 team, led on the field by Valentin Ivanov and Eduard Streltsov, is considered one of the best in Soviet football history. Streltsov, called the 'Russian Pelé', is the greatest idol in the club's history, which today plays its matches at the stadium that bears the striker's name. After the end of the Soviet Union, Torpedo alternated periods in the elite and lower divisions of Russian football, but maintained its loyal fan base and its historical weight.
