Tottenham Hotspur 1960-61
The Tottenham of 1960-61, managed by Bill Nicholson and captained by Danny Blanchflower, was the first team of the 20th century to win the English Championship and the FA Cup in the same season. The team won 31 matches and totaled 66 points in the league.
History
Bill Nicholson took charge of Tottenham in 1958 and built an offensive and technical team. The squad had captain Danny Blanchflower, Scotsman Dave Mackay, signed in 1959, striker Bobby Smith and winger Cliff Jones, among other names that became part of the club's history. In the 1960-61 season, Tottenham started the championship with 11 consecutive victories and dominated the English First Division, finishing with 66 points, 31 wins and 115 goals scored. The national title came comfortably ahead of Sheffield Wednesday, who finished second. On May 6, 1961, at Wembley Stadium, Spurs defeated Leicester City 2-0, with goals from Bobby Smith and Terry Dyson, and completed the Double, a feat that no English club had achieved since the 19th century. The team continued winning: they won the FA Cup in 1962 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1963, becoming the first British club to win a continental UEFA tournament.
