TSV 1860 München
TSV 1860 München is a sports club from Munich, founded in 1860, whose football department emerged in 1899. It is the only club besides Bayern to have won the Bundesliga in the city, winning the title in 1965-66.
History
TSV 1860 München was founded on May 17, 1860 as a gymnastics club, and its football section was created in 1899. Throughout the twentieth century, it became one of Bavaria's most traditional clubs, known by the nickname The Lions. The club won the German Cup (then Tschammer-Pokal) in 1942 and again in 1964, when it won the DFB-Pokal. It was one of the 16 founding members of the Bundesliga in 1963. The peak came in the mid-1960s. In 1965, 1860 reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup and lost to West Ham 2-0 at Wembley. In 1965-66, under coach Max Merkel, it won the only German title in the club's history, the Bundesliga. The team was relegated from the Bundesliga in 2004 and in the following years went through financial and sporting crises, which led them to lower divisions. Nevertheless, it maintains a loyal fan base and strong identity with Munich, especially in the traditional Grünwalder Stadion.
