Újpest FC
Újpest FC is one of Hungary's most traditional clubs, based in the Újpest district, in Budapest. It is one of the greatest Hungarian champions, with 20 national titles. It plays its home games at the Szusza Ferenc Stadium, named after one of its greatest idols.
History
The club was founded in 1885 as Újpesti Torna Egylet, in the then municipality of Újpest, today a district of Budapest. Throughout the 20th century it became one of the pillars of Hungarian football, alongside Ferencváros, MTK, and Honvéd. In the 1930s and 1940s, the club had strikers such as Gyula Zsengellér, a finalist of the 1938 World Cup for Hungary, and Ferenc Szusza, after whom the stadium is named. During this period it won the Mitropa Cup in 1929 and 1939, one of the most prestigious club competitions in Central Europe. The period of greatest national dominance occurred between the end of the 1960s and the mid-1970s, with names such as Ferenc Bene, Antal Dunai and László Fazekas. In this phase the club was a finalist of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969, defeated by Newcastle United. Újpest has 20 titles of the Hungarian Championship, the last of them in 1997-98. Since then it has competed in the national championship as one of the clubs with the largest fan base in the country.
