Vasco da Gama 1923

Vasco da Gama 1923 became Rio de Janeiro champions in their debut in the top division of the Metropolitan League of Land Sports. The team was made up of players from humble origins, including Black and mixed-race athletes, which triggered a reaction from Rio's football establishment.

History

Vasco da Gama Rowing Club was founded on August 21, 1898 as a rowing club and opened its football department in 1915. After winning the Rio de Janeiro second division in 1922, the club rose to the elite of the Metropolitan League of Land Sports. In 1923, in their inaugural season among the top clubs, Vasco became Rio de Janeiro champions. The squad brought together workers, Black and mixed-race players, in a football landscape still dominated by elite clubs and predominantly white athletes. The title sparked a reaction from traditional clubs, which created the Metropolitan Association of Athletic Sports (AMEA) in 1924 and demanded that Vasco exclude part of its roster to participate. President José Augusto Prestes responded with a letter known as the Historic Response, refusing the demand, and the club chose to stay out of the league rather than abandon its players.
