History
Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama was founded on August 21, 1898, in Rio de Janeiro, by Portuguese immigrants and their descendants, initially as a rowing club. Football was adopted in 1915 and São Januário stadium was inaugurated in 1927. In the 1940s and early 1950s, Vasco formed one of the most admired squads in the country, known as Expresso da Vitória, with names such as Ademir de Menezes, Barbosa, Danilo Alvim, Friaça and Chico. The club was Carioca champion in 1950 and again in 1952, establishing itself as one of the greatest forces in Rio de Janeiro football during that period. Vasco players formed the backbone of the Brazilian National Team at the 1950 World Cup, held in Brazil. Ademir was the tournament's top scorer, with 9 goals, and Barbosa was the goalkeeper in the final match against Uruguay, at the Maracanã.
