History

Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama was founded on August 21, 1898, in Rio de Janeiro, and has São Januário Stadium as its home. In the 1970s, the club experienced a period of great prominence, with the Brazilian Championship title in 1974 and the rise of Roberto Dinamite. In 1977, Vasco conquered the Carioca Championship, one of the most important titles of that decade for Vasco fans. The conquest came during a period when Rio's state championship was fiercely contested, with Flamengo and Fluminense as the main rivals. Roberto Dinamite, developed by the club, was the star of Vasco's attack and remains to this day the greatest goalscorer in Vasco's history. The 1977 team helped keep the squad among the main forces of Brazilian football after the national title in 1974.
