Vasco da Gama 1987-1988

Vasco in 1987 and 1988 was twice champion of Rio de Janeiro with a squad that featured Roberto Dinamite, the club's all-time leading goal scorer, and a young Romário. The team preceded the 1989 Brazilian Championship winning side.

History

Vasco da Gama won the Rio de Janeiro Championship in 1987 and 1988, in a successful rebuilding phase after the state titles of 1982. The club's reference point was Roberto Dinamite, idol of the fans and the greatest goal scorer in Vasco's history, with 708 goals. In the same team emerged Romário, developed through the youth categories and part of the professional squad since 1985. The striker left Vasco in 1988 to play for PSV Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, after standing out at the Seoul Olympic Games. The foundation built in those years paved the way for the 1989 Brazilian Championship title, when Vasco defeated São Paulo in the final. The period reinforced the club's tradition of balancing established stars and young talents developed in-house. São Januário Stadium, the club's historic home in São Cristóvão, and the Maracanã were the main venues for the campaigns.
