Vasco da Gama 2011
Vasco da Gama's 2011 team won the Brazilian Cup, finished as runner-up in the Brazilian Championship and reached the semi-final of the Copa Sudamericana. It was one of the strongest seasons of the club in the 21st century.
History
In 2011, Vasco da Gama assembled a competitive squad, with Fernando Prass in goal, Dedé in defense, Felipe and Diego Souza in midfield, and from the second half of the season, Juninho Pernambucano's return to the club. The season's major title was the Brazilian Cup. In the final against Coritiba, Vasco won 1-0 at São Januário and lost 3-2 at Couto Pereira. Away goals gave the Rio de Janeiro club its first title in the competition. In the Brazilian Championship, the team fought for the title until the last match and finished as runner-up, behind Corinthians. In the Copa Sudamericana, it reached the semi-final and was eliminated by Universidad de Chile. The season was also marked by a stroke suffered by coach Ricardo Gomes in August 2011, during a classic match against Flamengo. Assistant coach Cristóvão Borges took charge and kept the team competing for the Brazilian Championship.
