Vasco da Gama is a historic club from Rio de Janeiro, founded by Portuguese immigrants, which became a symbol of the struggle against racism in Brazilian football. São Januário is one of the country's most traditional stadiums.
History
Founded in 1898 by Portuguese immigrants, Vasco staged one of the most important moments in the anti-racist struggle in football by refusing to exclude Black players from its roster in 1924. In 1998, it won the Copa Libertadores after defeating Barcelona de Guayaquil in the final. With Romário in its squad in the 1990s, the club experienced one of its most brilliant phases in national football.
