History
VfL Bochum originates from a gymnastics club founded in 1848, with the football section formally established in the early 20th century. The club became one of the traditional representatives of the Ruhr industrial region. Bochum became known from the 1970s to 1990s for its longevity in the German first division, which earned it the nickname 'Die Unabsteigbaren' (the Unstoppables), despite suffering relegations in later years. Over the last two decades, the club alternated seasons between the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga, maintaining a loyal fanbase in the city of Bochum, in western Germany.
