Volta Redonda Football Club is the most popular club in the working-class city of Volta Redonda, in southern Fluminense. Voltaço achieved a historic moment by winning its first Rio de Janeiro State Championship in 2022, breaking the hegemony of Rio de Janeiro's major clubs.
History
Founded on August 18, 1976 in the city of Volta Redonda in southern Rio de Janeiro state, the club grew in the shadow of the National Steel Company (CSN), a company that for decades dominated the city's economy and identity. Voltaço became the sporting representation of Fluminense working-class culture. For decades, the club competed in regional football, building a loyal fan base in the interior of Rio. Voltaço also had a presence in the C and D series of the Brazilian Championship on several occasions, always fighting for access to higher divisions. The greatest moment in the club's history came in 2022, when Volta Redonda won its unprecedented Rio de Janeiro State Championship title, surpassing teams such as Flamengo, Vasco, Fluminense and Botafogo in a memorable campaign. The historic achievement definitively put the club on the map of national football and consolidated Voltaço as an emerging power in the Fluminense interior.
