Wigan Athletic

Founded in 1932 in the city of Wigan, Wigan Athletic is famous for winning the FA Cup in 2013 just days before being relegated from the Premier League, one of the most surprising feats in recent English football history.

History

Wigan Athletic Football Club was founded in 1932, following the closure of previous clubs that represented the city. The team underwent 34 election attempts over decades before finally being admitted to the Football League in 1978, starting its trajectory among English professional divisions. The club's most notable rise occurred in the early 2000s, when Wigan climbed successive divisions to reach the Premier League in 2005, under the command of businessman Dave Whelan. The historic peak came in 2013, when the team surprised Manchester City and won the FA Cup, despite being relegated from the English elite in the same season. Since then, Wigan has alternated seasons between the Championship and League One, winning the English third division title on more than one occasion. The club plays its home matches at Brick Community Stadium, with a capacity of just over 25,000 supporters, and is traditionally known by its fans as The Latics.
