Wimbledon FC
Wimbledon FC was a club from south London famous for its meteoric rise from amateur football to the English First Division and for winning the 1988 FA Cup against Liverpool. In 2004, after moving to Milton Keynes, it was renamed MK Dons.
History
Founded in 1889 as Wimbledon Old Centrals, the club spent decades in amateur and semi-professional football, winning the FA Amateur Cup in 1963. It was admitted to the Football League only in 1977 and, in nine seasons, rose from the fourth division to the first division, which it achieved in 1986 under the command of Dave Bassett. The pinnacle came on May 14, 1988, when Wimbledon, coached by Bobby Gould, won the FA Cup final 1-0 against Liverpool, then English champions, with a headed goal by Lawrie Sanchez and a penalty saved by goalkeeper Dave Beasant, the first to save a penalty in an FA Cup final at Wembley. The squad, nicknamed the Crazy Gang for its combative style, featured Vinnie Jones, Dennis Wise and John Fashanu. The club remained in the top flight until 2000, leaving Plough Lane in 1991 to play at Selhurst Park. After relegation, the board obtained authorization in 2002 to transfer the club to Milton Keynes, a decision that led fans to found AFC Wimbledon. In 2004, Wimbledon FC was officially renamed Milton Keynes Dons.
